The Secret Society of Acéphale was founded by French writer/philosopher Georges Bataille in March 1936. The original purpose of the "Headless" society was to "go beyond the world." The philosophy of the group is said to have been essentially Nietzschean, while Dionysian in ritual.

Among those on the outside, little is known about what occurred at Acéphale's meetings, attended by some of the most progressive surrealist artists and intellectuals of the time. An excerpt from Bataille's invitation to Patrick Waldberg "announced the constitution of a secret society involving a ceremony of initiation, rites, and the acceptance of a changed way of life..."

Our Order of Acéphale is rooted in the original secret sect. The semi-public face of our organization consists of several Priestesses - Sisters of the Order. Each of the Sisters accepts and/or sponsors devotees or Patrons to the Order.

A devotee is a submissive person who is trained as the personal servant and slave of a Dominant Priestess . This person becomes the personal property of the Priestess, trained to serve Her specific likes and wishes, but may be asked to serve the other Sisters on occasion.

A Patron is a Dominant Person who enters the Order via a slave. Our submissive priestesses (currently slave aynia, and Magdalen) are slaves belonging first to the other Sisters of the Order, and then to their Patrons.

Both slaves and Patrons provide the means by which we support the other aims of the Order of Acéphale, and may at times participate in the group activities of the Order.
